SUMMARY:Western WA - Building Better Spray Programs
DESCRIPTION:Description\nFungicide resistance to Powdery mildew and Botrytis bunch rot is a growing concern for grape producers. Developing spray programs that focus not only on disease management\, but also fungicide resistance mitigation can be challenging. This workshop is designed to assist crop consultants\, vineyard managers or anyone who writes or recommends fungicide programs\, with developing a fungicide spray program for wine in Western Washington\, with a focus designing programs that are predominately based on organic chemistries\, but who also might use other chemistries during critical fruit development periods. \nPreregistration is required. Registration closes Friday\, April 30th.\n \n\nRegister for Wednesday\, May 20th : please click here\nThe event will be from 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM Pacific Daylight Savings Time.\n\nRegistration will be limited to 30 people. \nCost: $35\, covers workshop packet\, video access\, and direct-to-participant shipping \nPre-Workshop Videos\nPrior to the workshop day\, participants will get access to an online curriculum to learn from national experts in grape diseases and fungicide resistance management\, about mildew diseases and management\, best practices for using fungicides\, and best sprayer practices. \nThis online access will include 5 videos that should be watched prior to the workshop start: \nHow Fungicides Work – Dr. Timothy Miles\, Michigan State University \nThis presentation covers how fungicides work\, from their biological to their physical properties. It describes the historical use of fungicides against plant diseases. Details are provided on how we classify and talk about fungicides\, how fungicides are regulated\, and how to read a fungicide label.  It also briefly introduces the concept of fungicide resistance and discusses other factors that influence fungicide efficacy. \nFungicide Resistance Development – Dr. Melanie Lewis Ivey\, The Ohio State University \nIn this presentation\, the timeline of development of synthetic fungicides is discussed\, along with the timeline of when fungicide resistance to these products had occurred. How fungicide resistance develops\, and spread is presented\, along with how application practices drives that selection of fungicide resistance in key plant diseases. Practices to help mitigate the development of fungicide resistance are introduced. \nDisease Management and Fungicide Resistance – Dr. Michelle M. Moyer\, Washington State University \nBuilding on How Fungicides Work\, and Fungicide Resistance Development\, this presentation goes into detail on the specific production practices and approaches that can inadvertently lead to loss of disease control\, and potential selection of fungicide resistance.  Best spray practices and discussed\, along with how to integrate cultural practices for improved disease control. How to build generalized spray programs that focus on fungicide rotation for resistance management are discussed. \nGrape Powdery Mildew Management – Dr. Michelle M. Moyer\, Washington State University \nThis presentation covers basic vine and fungal biology for the management of grapevine powdery mildew. Key environmental triggers and phenology-based management timings are presented\, along with a discussion of appropriate cultural practices for disease control. A season-long approach for disease management\, including key considerations for the incorporation of chemical and cultural management strategies are presented. \nBotrytis Bunch Rot Management – Dr. Timothy Miles\, Michigan State University \nThis presentation covers basic vine and fungal biology for the management of Botrytis bunch rot. Key environmental triggers and phenological-based management timings are presented\, along with a discussion of appropriate cultural practices for disease control. A season-long approach for disease management\, including key considerations for the incorporation of chemical and cultural management strategies are presented. \nWorkshop – Day Of Event\nOn the day of the workshop\, a brief presentation on how to best approach spray programs will occur. Participants will then break into online groups and build a spray program based on a real-life scenario from Western WA for the management of powdery mildew and Botrytis bunch rot. Groups will then defend this initial spray program to the group\, and the design will be discussed with participating experts and other workshop participants. \nFollowing the building of that base spray program\, groups will then be assigned an alternative weather scenario\, and asked to adjust their spray programs accordingly. These adjustments will also be presented to the group for discussion and feedback. \n\nContact Information\nFor more information on the workshop please contact: FRAME team – Dr. Michelle Moyer (michelle.moyer@wsu.edu)\, or Dr. Charlotte Oliver (charlotte.oliver@wsu.edu) \nOther co-moderators for this event include Serena Roberge-Gordon\, Mike Lempriere\, and Dave Bomalaski. \n  \nFinancial Support\nAdditional costs of this workshop are offset with financial support by: \n\nUSDA-NIFA-SCRI Award No. 2018-03375 titled “FRAME: Fungicide Resistance Assessment\, Mitigation and Extension Network for Wine\, Table\, and Raisin Grapes”\n\nAnyone attending this program who requires auxiliary aids or services\, please contact Michelle Moyer at 509-786-9234 or michelle.moyer@wsu.edu . SUMMARY:Washington - 2020 Powdery Mildew Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for new crop consultants\, vineyard managers or anyone who would like a beginner refresher course on the principles to designing a disease management program. \n  \nPreregistration is required:  https://2020framewashington.brownpapertickets.com \nRegistration will be limited to 40 people\, and will close February 17\, 2020. \nThere will be 4 WSDA Pesticide Applicator Recertification credits available for this workshop. \n\nAgenda\n  \n8:00-8:15 AM      Registration / Check-in \n8:15-9:00 AM      Powdery Mildew Biology and Management (Dr. Michelle Moyer\, WSU) \nIn order to effectively manage a pest\, we have to know their biology. This talk will cover key environmental factors that influence how the powdery mildew fungus develops\, as well as cover basic mildew management principles\, including when to do cultural and chemical intervention\, and why timing is so important for disease control. \n9:00-9:45 AM     Fungicide Stewardship & Application Best Practices (Dr. Charlotte Oliver\, WSU) \nFungicides are the primary tool in grape powdery mildew management. However\, if they are misused\, they can become ineffective. This talk will cover the basics on how fungicide resistance can become an issue in production viticulture\, how to approach designing a fungicide spray program that optimizes both disease control while maintaining the longevity of currently available products\, and how sprayer operation and spray application influences both fungicide stewardship efforts and efficacy of a disease management program. \n9:45-10:00 AM     Break \n10:00-11:00 AM   Build a Base Powdery Mildew Management Spray Program …. (Dr. Michelle Moyer\, WSU) \nThis hands-on activity will divide workshop participants into teams. Each team will be tasked with designing a powdery mildew fungicide program. First\, teams will be asked to read a series of fungicide labels (provided to them) and develop their “fungicide inventory list”. This process will teach participants how to read a label\, and information is important to record when designing a management program. Teams will then design a generic fungicide program for powdery mildew based on historical average dates or key developmental stages for wine grapes in eastern Washington. \n11:00-11:45 AM    … Adjust that Program for High and Low Pressure Years (Dr. Michelle Moyer\, WSU) \nAfter building their base program\, teams will then be asked to adjust their programs based on high-pressure (high disease)\, and low-pressure (low disease) environmental scenarios.  This process will help emphasize biological information and fungicide stewardship practices presented in the first part of the morning. \n11:45-12:30 AM    … Then Defend Your Programs (Dr. Michelle Moyer\, WSU) \nTeams will then present their base program\, and their adjusted programs\, highlighting why they made the management decisions they did\, and how high and low-pressure scenarios altered their base program decisions. This part of the activity is designed to promote critical thinking associated with decision making. \n12:30 – 1:00 PM    Conclusions and Surveys \n  \nFinancial Support \nAdditional costs of this workshop are offset with support from: \n\nUSDA-NIFA–SCRI Award No. 2018-03375 titled “FRAME: Fungicide Resistance Assessment\, Mitigation and Extension Network for Wine\, Table\, and Raisin Grapes”\nUSDA-CPPM-EIPM Award titled: “Washington State IPM Extension Implementation Program 2017-2020“\n\nAnyone attending this program who requires auxiliary aids or services\, please contact Michelle Moyer at 509-786-9234 or michelle.moyer@wsu.edu .
